Are you trying to replace one or more missing teeth? If so, then you’ve probably considered getting dental implants—one of the most effective restoration options! Before you can get them, however, you’ll need to have a discussion with your dentist to see if the treatment will be right for you. Read on to learn what you can expect your dental implant consultation to go like prior to arriving at the office.

The Introductory Conversation

You’ll meet the dental team after arriving at your appointment. They’ll ensure you feel comfortable throughout the entire process. After becoming familiar with everyone, your dentist will talk with you about your dental history and your concerns about your smile. This will be a good time to inform them of the outcome you wish to see.

Oral Evaluation & Imaging

Once they understand more about your situation, they’ll perform an oral examination to assess the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth. Your dentist will also evaluate your bone density and whether you have a sufficient amount to support dental implants. If you don’t have enough healthy bone mass, you may require a bone graft before your treatment. They may also use X-rays to see your jawbone more clearly and to know exactly where the implant will go.

Discussing Your Treatment Plan

After your examination, your dentist will discuss your treatment options. There are usually several restorations available, such as crowns, bridges, and dentures, depending on how many and where the missing teeth are. Once a treatment option is chosen, your dentist will explain the entire plan, including:

  • How long the process will take
  • The number of appointments needed
  • Sedation dentistry and anesthesia options
  • The recovery time frame
  • Aftercare instructions

Questions & Answers

You’ll want to be completely confident and clear about the treatment process, so you can certainly take the time to ask as many questions as you want. Whether it’s to reiterate any details or talk about their experience, your dentist will answer your concerns to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible moving forward.

Once your dental implant consultation is over, you should feel assured that you’ll get the treatment you need! And even if you still have any lingering questions, you can always speak with your dentist beforehand.
